Earth First! is a network of people and campaigns fighting ecological destruction and the forces driving it. EF! is a convenient banner for people who share similar philosophies to work under. We believe in non-hierarchical organising and the use of direct action.
EF! originated in the USA in 1979, but from there spread around the world, and morphed to suit local conditions & priorities. In the UK it was successfully started in 1991, and quickly grew, developing it's own distinct character.
Initially the biggest campaigns were around imports of tropical timber and anti-roads campaigns, though there were numerous smaller campaigns. Genetic crops, international solidarity, peat and climate change have been other strong campaigns over time.
The first British Earth First! Gathering was on a beautiful site near Brighton in February 1992. There are usually two EF! gatherings a year, the Winter Moot and the Summer Gathering. The Summer Gathering is 5 days of workshops, networking, skill sharing and planning actions at a low impact eco-living camp organised non-hierarchically.
This year the Summer Gathering will be held at a rural site (accessible by public transport) in the Peak District from the 19-24th August 2015. The address is : Bradley Nook Farm, Hulland Ward, Ashbourne, Derbyshire DE6 3EL (OS Grid Reference for the gate: SK 226475 - see the Information page for all the details).
